Last summer, I visited Las Vegas for the first time before starting a short tour of the Southwest. I was lucky enough to book a hotel near the Strip with this view—and a balcony that let me photograph it without glass in the way.
The view I had
The fountains fill the foreground, with illuminated hotels stretching toward the mountains beneath a deep blue sky. There is plenty competing for attention, but that feels right for my first impression of Vegas.
I used a tripod and made this as a single exposure: half a second at f/8, ISO 100. I was especially glad I could bring out some detail in the Sphere. It occupies a small part of the frame, but I like being able to make out its display among all those lights.
Next time
I didn’t get out to photograph the Strip at street level. It was so hot that I left that part of the experience for another visit.
Next time, I’d like to get closer to the streets and see what catches my eye there. For this first visit, I was happy to have the balcony.
